Confession is always weakness. The grave soul keeps its own secrets, and takes its own punishment in silence.

-Dorothy Dix

*an audible click followed by dead air consumes the space before a confident, female voice disrupts the noise*

Lisa Howard, interview with Casey Dawes, tape 1. *paper shuffling* Thank you again Ms. Dawes for agreeing to this interview, I'm sure you can imagine my editor's reaction when I told her the news.

*a second voice, velvet in its' tone with the hint of the smile on her face ringing through, speaks next*

No need to thank me, Ms. Howard. Both of us are getting what we want; I have my new establishment advertised in one of the few publications that cater to the
supernatural community and you and your editor get an exclusive.

Speaking of your establishment, what can you tell me about it? The secrecy surrounding it has given a foundation to many different ideas and gossip.

Then allow me to allay such rumors for you and your readers. The establishment is called Vigor and Vice, a modern take on a gentleman's club if you will. All those who frequent its' halls are members, and yes there is a process to become a member, but it isn't very difficult. Members are allowed to bring guests and they are responsible for their guests and any incidents that may occur. At this time we mainly cater to vampires and their wants and needs, but we are planning to branch out to other members of the supernatural community and of course any supernatural member is welcome.

You mentioned supplying vampires' wants and needs, what exactly does that include?

Blood of course, in many different forms. We offer a wide arrangement: from blood donated at special drives, to hemo pops and other blood confectioneries, and as far as living, willing, blood donors that work at the club.

So you have live donors, don't you worry about secrecy?

Doesn't every one? Secrecy may be an issue, but every donor is screened, tested, made to sign a contract that states explicitly what will happen if the contract is broken. And on top of that, a very nice paycheck that most certainly elicits a second thought if one of the employees thinks about breaking their contract.

Interesting, so how does it work? If I were to visit this club, how would I pick the donor I wanted?

We have multiple programs that list the different donors which covers everything from their blood type, age, drug use, species, any extra acts they may be willing to perform, along with their picture.

Other acts? What do you mean?

That is something I cannot discuss. If you're so curious, then you should pay us a visit.

*takes a deep breath* I suppose that will have to do. Where can our readers find this club? What are your hours?

At this time, we are open from sunset to sunup, but this too may change in the future. And for its' location, you need to know a member to find that out. This is a gentleman's club after all, we don't want curious humans to stumble upon our doorstep.

I'm assuming humans are not allowed then?"

Absolutely not, we pride ourselves on our secrecy, so besides the limited employees who are human, no other humans are allowed; not as member, not as guests.

I was informed that you are looking for new employees as well?

You are correct. While we are at a decent number of staff, I would like to increase that number to better facilitate more clientele and different tastes. You editor said they'd be happy to include my advertisements in your publication, so I assume that is where your readers can go if they'd like to apply.

Oh, yes it will definitely be in there along with this article. Now, I have plenty about your establishment, I was hoping you'd be willing to answer a few questions about yourself.

*amusement seeps into the velvety voice* I suppose it couldn't hurt, but I hope that if I refuse to answer a question, that you will be so kind as to not push the subject or I will have to ask you to leave.

Fair enough. Can you tell me a bit about growing up? Perhaps where, what it was like, when you became a vampire?

I was born and raised in Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. My father was one of the landed gentry and my mother was the dearest thing to him. I was the middle child to my older brother William and my younger sister Emma; how I wound up with the name Casey, I will never fathom and never thought to ask my parents. It was a happy enough childhood, but when I was ten my little sister fell ill and later died. It broke my mother's heart and left her quite indisposed to care for her other children, so my father doted on my brother and I, but it was obvious that he worried about my mother. My brother ended up marrying a lovely girl named Sara, though we didn't always get along and they settled close to our family home. Once my brother was married and gone, my mother seemed to want nothing more than to see me off as well and without my knowledge, arranged a wedding for myself and another of the landed gentry families, to a man named Edward Westwood.

*the voice turns sad and heavy with the memories* I knew this man, had never taken a like to him in all the times we had met, but that didn't seem to matter to my mother or my father who could only see his wife's happiness in the ordeal. Thus I was married, and taken a goodly distance from my home and my brother who at that point I considered my only family. It was a short six months later that Mr. Westwood's true self made its' appearance. I was good for one thing, and every day that passed that did not bring him news of my bearing his heir, he took to beating me. Not so harshly at first, but then he started drinking and beatings grew worse. I tried to apply for help from my family, the only one who came to visit was my brother, and my husband made sure we were never alone together so I could prove my accusation. Thus I suffered and continued to do so until a year after our marriage when he went too far.

Until that day, I had never feared for my life, but he claimed that if I couldn't carry an heir than I was of no use to him and started to beat me with his cane. The liquor on his breath was heavy and sweet and I knew he had drunk far more than he ever should have. All I could do was cry out and hope someone heard me,
but he had sent all the servants away that day and when I tried to defend myself, he'd just hit harder. Maybe it was luck or providence, but someone did hear my pleas for help. One minute I was curled up on the floor, my body bruised and broken and the next I was being effortlessly carried to my bed. A soft, female voice carried through the haze, "I will be back, little one, and you will have a choice to make. Die as the weak woman that man made you, or live and prove that there is nothing weak about you."

*dead air fills the tape for a few seconds* Obviously I chose to live.

*low throat clearing noise* Th-thank you for sharing that with me.

You're welcome. If I may be honest, I hadn't meant to tell you all of that, I suppose I can't resist a pretty face.

Oh, well, thank you again. Umm, so you lived in England, when did you come to America?

I haven't been here in the States long, I came over on an airplane which was an interesting experience to say the least.

It has been said that you are a Nightwalker, aren't all Nightwalkers cursed?

Yes we are. Obviously, not allowed to set foot into sunlight is a great curse indeed.

Well, yes, but don't they have other curses besides that?

It's possible, but if you think I'm going to outright tell you what my curses are, you are wrong. Instead I will leave you with a puzzle, there was a very good reason I denied having my picture taken.

Does it have to do with your curse?

Between us, let's just say that I never look good in a photo, and a spoon gives me a better picture of myself than a mirror does.

Okaaay, what about a gift? Just because you have a curse or curses doesn't mean you couldn't have a gift, right?

You are most certainly right about that. A vampire can have both, but what would happen if I simply spilled my secrets to you? I would be putting myself in danger and you as well from myself.

Is...is that a threat?

In a manner, if you'd really like to know, then I will tell you. But if I do, then you must erase that tape you have in the recorder as soon as possible, and believe me I will make sure it is done, and if I learn you've told someone my secret, or include it in this article, then I will dispose of you. Is it worth it?

*a slight tremor in the voice* Your secret is safe with me.

Hmm, we shall see. My gift is something called allure. Now this gift can take many forms, but for me, I have the ability to invade your thoughts and persuade you to do something. It could be something harmless or it could be deadly. Do you understand, Ms. Howard?

Y-yes, I completely understand. *papers shuffling* Let's move on, shall we? I was hoping you could tell me about your sense of fashion? I know we agreed no pictures, but I admit I am curious.

All of my clothing is fashioned after men's victorian style. This includes waistcoats, top hats, ascots, vests, great coats and so on.

But you aren't trying to project yourself as a male?

No, absolutely not. I have always enjoyed men's fashion of that time and have taken steps to wear nothing but. I have an idea that if more men and women were to adopt this style of dress, they'd look much more enticing.

*laughs* I don't know about all that. Would be awfully warm to walk around like that. Anyway, back to you, what motivates you, drives you to do things like open up your club?

It was simply something I wanted to do. I know what I want, Ms. Howard and I will do what I need to, to obtain it. I suppose that's selfish, but once you've lived for such a long time, it's hard not to be.

Perhaps, but I'm sure there are those out there who wish they only had to rely on themselves to keep them driven. Do you have any advice for others who'd like to venture out on their own or start a business?

The only thing I can think of is, chose those around you carefully. It's the ones you work with, the ones you share ideas with that can hinder you or help you.

Well thank you again Ms. Dawes, it has been a ple... *the tape cuts out*
